Surf Fishing Rods

Choosing Surf Fishing Rods

Surf fishing rods can be made from carbon. What they do is combine Kevlar with plastic composite carbon. Due to it's strength, and it's lightness, it makes for a thinner pole, while allowing you to keep length and span.

A rod that is lighter can be easier to handle. It can be less tiring if you're using a lighter rod. Also you'll want to think about resistance to air, which will make for easier casting on those windy days.

The rings on the rod are usually made of silicon carbon or a hard chrome. You can find ceramic rings too. These allow for a smooth transition, so when line passes through, there's less friction.

Due to the cost of silicon products, often times ceramic rings are used in their place. It's more cost effective, though not as tough or as light as silicon. Chrome rings are a good choice as well, though they may need to be replaced seasonally.

Overall, there should be at least 13 rings that run the length of the pole to the tip. The closer to the tip, the closer the rings should run.

Choosing the length of your surf fishing rod is important. Because you'll be fishing out farther, you'll want to a longer surf fishing rod. This longer rod will offer better control.

Handles

Handles are made from either cork or foam. Whichever you choose, this is a matter of preference. Just try handling both materials so you can have a good “feel” before buying it. It comes down to personal preference.

Action

What is action? Action means "how the rod will bend" when it's under stress and pressure from a fighting fish!

What about the tips?

You can choose either a spliced tip or a hollow tip on your surf fishing rods. Spliced tips are a good choice for fast action fish. Hollow tips are good for long distance strikes.

When choosing a rod, ask yourself a couple of questions:

How often do you plan on fishing? If you're looking to fish as a hobby, you may not want to spend as much as someone who is looking to become a tournament fisher. Choosing your first surf fishing rod should feel good, not be a drain! Are you a weekend warrior still learning? Before you get hung up on a specific rod, ask around and see what your friends are using or recommend. You can also ask for tips at a bait and tackle shop. frequent and where do you fish?

How comfortable is my surf fishing rod?Don't only think of things like power or sensitivity. Figure out your surf fishing technique. If you're going to be fishing with lures, you'll want a comfortable rod for casting. A great Surf Fishing Rod will make for a more pleasurable experience.
