Buying a Surfboard 101

Buying a surfboard 101: with Jeff Santoloci from L.B.I. Surfing Lessons 609-494-SURFWhen a surfer is looking for their first board they want a board that is suitable for their size and their ability. The general rule of thumb is to go with a funboard (over 7') or a longboard (over 9'). If you are a youngster and want to put in the work that it takes to surf aggressively you can go with a shortboard (around 6 foot). Rule of thumb: The smaller the board, the harder it is to learn on. Board recommendation: When a beginning surfer is shopping for a surfboard, they are looking for a board that has good buoyancy, stability, and durability. •The buoyancy is important to help with a beginner's paddling ability (thick boards float better). •The stability is important so the board doesn't feel too shaky when you are trying to catch the wave and stand-up on the board (go with a wider and longer board). •Durability is important as well because during the learning curve everyone wipes out quite a bit. Therefore, you should go with a board that has a heavy layer of fiberglass on it, or just go with an epoxy fiberglass board. We carry surfboards specifically targeted towards beginner to intermediate surfers. They are the perfect transition after you've learned on a soft-deck board and would like to move onto a board that performs better. Call L.B.I. Surfing Lessons to schedule yourself a lesson and set you up with a great deal on your first board 609-494-SURF. Happy surfing!
